How to Read a Commercial Power Bill (and Spot the Savings)

Your commercial power bill holds more than a number to pay each quarter. Once you know how to read it, you can see exactly where your money goes and where solar, batteries and smarter energy management can claw it back.


Why a Commercial Bill Is Different

Residential bills are fairly simple: you pay for the electricity you use. Commercial and industrial bills add several more layers, and each one is a lever you can pull to reduce costs.

Understanding those layers matters because two businesses using the same amount of power can pay very different amounts depending on when they use it and how their site is metered.

Usage Charges: Peak, Shoulder and Off-Peak

Usage is billed per unit of energy consumed, but many commercial sites are on time-of-use tariffs. That means the rate changes depending on the time of day, with peak periods costing far more than off-peak.

This is where solar starts to earn its keep. Generating your own power during the day offsets expensive peak and shoulder usage. Pairing that with a battery lets you store cheap or self-generated energy and use it when grid rates climb.

Demand Charges: The Quiet Budget-Killer

Demand charges are billed on your highest rate of power draw over a set interval, not your total usage. A single brief spike, say every machine switching on at once, can set your demand charge for the whole billing period.

For many businesses this is one of the largest and most overlooked lines on the bill. A battery can shave those peaks by discharging when your site spikes, which can reduce demand charges significantly depending on your load profile and tariff.

Network, Supply and Metering Charges

These are the fees for delivering power to your site and keeping you connected. Some are fixed, some scale with usage or demand. You often can't remove them entirely, but reducing your grid reliance can trim the components that scale with consumption.

It's also worth checking your metering type. Larger sites usually have interval metering that records usage in short blocks, which gives a detailed picture of exactly when your costs pile up, useful data for sizing solar and battery correctly.
