Solar and Battery Solutions for Commercial Data Centres

Guide · Commercial solar & battery · ~5 min read

Data centres run flat out around the clock, which makes them one of the most power-hungry commercial loads going. Solar and battery done right can take a real bite out of running costs without putting uptime at risk.

Why Data Centres Are a Special Case

Most commercial sites have peaks and troughs. A data centre doesn't really switch off, so the load sits high and steady day and night. That flat, constant demand changes how you think about solar and battery.

The upside is that a data centre can soak up almost everything a rooftop array produces during the day, because there's always load to feed. The challenge is that uptime and redundancy sit above everything else, so any energy system has to work around existing UPS, generators and switchboards rather than complicate them.

What Solar Can Do for a Data Centre

Because the daytime load is always there, solar generation tends to be self-consumed on site instead of exported for a lower return. That generally makes rooftop solar a sensible fit where the roof area and structure allow it.

Data centre roofs can be busy with plant and cooling equipment, so panel layout needs to work around that. Where roof space is tight, ground-mount or carport arrays on surrounding land can add capacity. ATI scales systems from 6.6kW through to MW, and our 415kW rooftop at DB Santasalo in Bulli is an example of what a serious commercial roof can carry.

Where Batteries and AI Energy Arbitrage Fit

A battery lets a data centre store energy and choose when to use it. ATI's differentiator is AI-driven energy arbitrage: the battery charges when power is cheap and discharges or exports when prices are high. For a site that draws power all night, being able to shift when you buy from the grid can be significant.

This is separate from your UPS, which is there for ride-through and clean failover, not cost optimisation. A properly designed battery can complement that role without pretending to replace it. How much you gain depends on your tariff, your network and your load profile, which is exactly why a site review matters.

Protecting Uptime During Design and Install

The quickest way to lose a data centre operator's confidence is to put uptime at risk. That's why the electrical work matters as much as the panels. ATI uses an in-house team with no subcontractors, and we're CEC and SAA accredited, so the people planning the integration are the people doing the work.

Good design means staged works, clear switching plans and tie-ins that respect existing redundancy. We look at how new generation and storage connect to your switchboards, how fault protection is maintained, and how everything behaves during a grid event.

Getting the Numbers Right for Your Site

Every data centre is different. Your roof, your cooling setup, your tariff and your redundancy requirements all shape what's worth doing. We won't quote payback or savings figures off the back of a web page, because real numbers come from measuring your actual load and reviewing your bills.

A site review is where this gets specific: what the roof can hold, where a battery fits, how arbitrage would play against your tariff, and how it all connects without touching uptime.

Talk to ATI About a Site Review

If you run or manage a data centre and want to understand what solar and battery could realistically do, the next step is a site review. ATI works Australia-wide across commercial and residential projects, from vineyards and workshops to large industrial rooftops.

We'll walk your site, look at your load and tariff, and give you a grounded view of what makes sense, with uptime front and centre.

The short version

A data centre's 24/7 load profile is exactly what makes well-designed solar and battery worth looking at, provided the install respects redundancy and uptime first.
