Why refrigerated retail is a strong fit for solar

Refrigeration is a constant, predictable load. Unlike a business that only draws power in short bursts, a supermarket or bottle shop is cooling stock every hour of the day. That baseload runs straight through the middle of the day when your solar array is producing the most.

When your generation lines up with your consumption like that, more of the solar you produce gets used on site rather than exported. Self-consumption is where the value usually sits, because you're offsetting power you'd otherwise buy at retail rates.

Understanding your cold-chain load profile

Before any panels go on the roof, it pays to understand how and when your site actually uses power. Refrigeration, HVAC, lighting and back-of-house equipment all draw differently through the day, and your tariff structure shapes what's worth targeting.

Demand charges are worth a close look. Many commercial tariffs bill on peak demand, and compressors kicking in together can spike that figure. A properly sized system, and increasingly a battery, can help smooth those peaks — though how much depends entirely on your tariff and network.

Adding batteries and AI energy arbitrage

Solar covers your daytime load, but refrigeration keeps running after the sun goes down. That's where a battery earns its place — storing cheap or self-generated energy to cover evening and overnight cooling.
